I didn’t know if it was seconds or minutes before I came to myself. My head was spinning and dizzy. I couldn’t focus my eyes, and my vision was blurry. My hearing was like a poorly tuned radio that was under a pillow. My pacer helped to drag me off the ground and I managed to pull my torn-off leg back on. Then I forged with him. At first, I staggered, and then I walked. Suddenly, my whole body was cramping. But I knew I was strong enough to finish the race. Finally, those tottering walking steps turned into running again.

But my son’s words echoed in my mind, “Dad, I know you will win the race.” Though my body screamed at me, I scraped the bottom of the barrel to run. Finally, I crossed the final time mat and collapsed to the ground, my body having given everything that it could. By some miracle, I set a new double amputee world record. I had battled with everything I had on the streets of Chicago, and I arose victorious.
